The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award was signed into law on August 20, 1987.  From this award, the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence were derived to help American companies and organizations enhance competitiveness and productivity. The Criteria are the basis for organizational self-assessments, for making Awards, and for giving feedback to applicants.

► Delivery of ever-improving value to customers, contributing to marketplace success

► Improvement of overall organizational effectiveness and capabilities

► Organizational and personal learning.

The Criteria are built upon a set of core values and concepts that include visionary leadership, customer-driven excellence, valuing employees and partners, management by fact, and a focus on results and creating value. These core values are embodied in the seven Baldrige Categories, as identified here for businesses:
